~~ THE MARKETING HIGH ROAD ~~

During October and November, I'll be focusing on
re-focusing -- on helping you repackage and refocus
your business services and your marketing message
while we get through the post-hurricane doldrums and
the rather frantic election energies.

The business sections of the daily papers have already
begun running rather gloomy headlines about the
economy and, while I believe we can rise above mass
consciousness, we also have to be aware of our clients'
and prospects' special needs during this time.

For example, normally I offer a 3-hour consultation in
which we revitalize your business focus so that your
marketing plan has a definite audience and desired result.

If you already have a pretty good idea of your niche and
your target market, but just need to adjust your marketing
for an uncertain economy, I am now offering a 90-minute
"Refocus Consultation" to help you repackage your
services and revise your marketing message for the times.

This is an example of repackaging my services to meet the
needs of lightworkers whose own businesses may be
a bit sluggish right now. For just $99, you can inject new
life into your business and reposition yourself as a relevant
and essential service for your prospective clients.

You could try a similar approach for your own business.

A few days ago, I participated in a teleclass with one of
my marketing heroes, Marcia Yudkin. Her topic was on
pricing your products and services, and her presentation
offered some very practical advice. She made the point
that if your prices are too low, you become invisible as a
vendor-to-be-taken-seriously. Even in a wobbly economy.

On the other hand, if you raise your prices, everything
about you and your business must look like it contains
that degree of value. No home-made ads and brochures,
for instance, if you're not a desktop publishing expert.

In the Q & A session, I asked Marcia if she had any ideas
for Florida business owners who are experiencing the
effects of a post-hurricane economy. She said that,
rather than lowering prices to keep business going, it
would be public-spirited to offer different options for clients
to pay for your services. Offering to delay payments or to
spread payments out over a longer period would keep your
fee structure from being eroded but at the same time would
help people whose finances have taken a hit.

Another repackaging option is the "Small, Medium, Large"
approach. If you're a coach, you could offer shorter sessions,
pro-rated at your usual fee, as a starter package. "Medium"
could be your typical coaching package, and "Large" might
be an intensive package of weekly or twice-weekly full
length sessions, plus unlimited emails, for people who want
to move quickly and have the funds to do so.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as a tool for refocusing

My experience is that most lightworker/entrepreneurs are
so service-oriented, they don't like to leave anyone out.
Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to implement a strong,
tightly focused marketing plan. If you don't have the
marketing budget of Coca-Cola or General Motors, focus
is essential.

I've been hearing about some business owners cutting
back or eliminating their advertising to "save money." Of
course, what they are really doing is making themselves
invisible at a time when people need them the most. Now,
more than ever, you'll want to stay in the forefront,
providing a practical solution for someone's problems.

And be an evangelist for your business offerings. If you
really believe that your work is special, say so! People
will catch the energy of your message.

Finally, it always helps to continue doing those things
that keep you balanced and able to stay in higher states
of consciousness, even when the world around you feels
like a tempest... or a hurricane. You know the drill...
meditation, prayer, inspirational reading, massage therapy,
energy work, inner healing, staying fit, eating well, getting
lots of rest. Good self-care is essential for people who are
in business to make a difference, especially if we want
to be seen as "practicing what we preach."

I call this "Taking the Marketing High Road." Staying
healthy, positive, focused and in a higher place of
consciousness while, at the same time, giving people
what they want and need. In other words, a marketing
plan you can love.

~~ MARKETING BOOK REVIEW ~~

"How to Make More Money and Help More People
in Your Alternative Health Business" by Stephen Keighery
and Michael Pang.

This is a new e-book from the folks at Alternative Health
Marketing. It's a basic marketing primer for body-mind-spirit
professionals and begins with a chapter called "Why
Alternative Health Businesses Struggle and How You Can
Overcome This." The book also discusses your Unique
Selling Proposition - how to identify what sets you apart
from others in your business - and shows you what to do
and NOT do for effective advertising results.

I especially liked the chapter called "The Seven Common
Pitfalls of Advertising and How to Avoid Them." It is still
amazing to me that many business owners prefer to see
more graphics than text in their ads. A high quality picture
of a product might be worth a thousand words, but it can't
tell you the benefits you'll receive when you buy it. Words
are necessary to tell the story.

There's also a good explanation of how direct mail works
and when to use it... plus a worksheet for figuring out the
lifetime value of your customers. This is helpful when you're
setting a marketing budget and wonder how much is too
much to spend on advertising.
