The IRS announced that, as of July 1, 2008, Standard Mileage Rate (SMR) for deducting business use of your personal vehicle, increased by 8-cents per mile. The NEW RATE is 58.5¢ per mile as of July 1.

~~ ENRICH THE WORLD WITH EVERY BUSINESS TRANSACTION ~~

I recently read Wallace D. Wattles' 1910 classic book "The
Science of Getting Rich -- or -- Financial Success Through Creative
Thought" and one idea jumped out, begging to be expanded upon.

"You must give every person more in use value than he gives you
in cash value. Then, you are adding to the life of the world with
every business transaction."

Business is essentially a mutually-agreed upon practice to exchange
one form of energy for another. GOOD business is selling a person
something that adds more to his life than the thing he gave you
in exchange (usually money). 

If a person feels he has received excellent value in his dealings
with you, he is likely to become a repeat customer. You have
improved his life with your product or service and he, in turn, has
increased your income, thus allowing you to more fully develop and
express your own life.

Giving from your heart helps you receive blessings in return. It's a
cornerstone concept of the spiritual marketing approach to
business.

If you're a teacher, your instruction will contribute more to your
students' well-being than is reflected by the twenty or thirty dollar
admission fee. An artist can add beauty and inspiration to a
person's life far above the selling price of his artworks. A good
healer offers priceless peace of mind in addition to amelioration
of a specific health issue.

But be CONSCIOUS of providing this extra value. In every
instance, offer an extra service or put your utmost ability and
talent into the creation of the object to be sold. When you always
strive for your best, you attract the best -- clients, employees,
partners. People feel the power of your energy, in contrast to
the multitude of others who just settle for "getting by."

The "Secrets of Success" aren't secrets at all. They're just the
practical applications of consciously living our lives in tune with
The Infinite. Real success will have arrived when we can do
this unconsciously -- without having to think about it at all. But

regarding the marketing concept of "giving before receiving."

~~ THE LAW OF COMPENSATION IN ACTION ~~

The Law of Compensation states that for everything
given there shall be a return, and if you give freely from
the heart, the universe returns the gift with a tenfold
return. That's why it's "better to give than to receive."

If you provide lackluster service and shoddy workmanship,
you will be compensated accordingly.

On the other hand, if you operate your business dealings at
the highest vibration of which you are capable, and have a
strong intent to serve your customers well, you will receive
your "just rewards" for the seeds you have sown.

Business dealings are energy exchanges; be ready to
RECEIVE your compensation by making sure to eliminate
all thoughts of lack or deprivation by which you block
your own good coming to you. (Two useful resources are
the Wattles book referenced above and "The Seed Money
in Action" book noted below.) 

Here are a couple of examples to think about: 

1. Markus Allen's November 13 "Marketing Tip of the Day"
offered an interesting example of "giving to receive" that you
could adapt for your own business.

John Volk ( http://www.fetch123.com/arsenal-productions )
submitted this nifty followup tip about cheerfully sending
customers to the competition:

"When the Guitar Center (La Mesa, California) didn't carry an
item, we'd ask the customer for their name and phone number
to place in our "Ups file." At the same time, we suggested
3 competitor names to help them get the item.

Usually within a few days, our "Ups file" alerted us to contact
the customer and ask if they got what they were looking for.

They almost always said yes and ALWAYS were shocked
at getting our followup calls (for I didn't sell them the item).

Yep...you guessed it. We get customers for life and many
word of mouth referrals. When you give a (needed) 
referral to your competition, the customer sees you not only
as being helpful, but someone that cares about the locals
in the area."

~~ THE "INFOGURU MARKETING MANUAL" -- A REVIEW ~~

I've been a fan of Robert Middleton's for a year or more -- ever
since I discovered his excellent e-zine "More Clients." I
recently purchased his e-book for independent professionals,
"The InfoGuru Marketing Manual," and I wanted to pass
along my review in case you want to sharpen up your own
marketing for the New Year.

Within the first four pages of the manual, Robert had me
hooked -- and taking notes. He's especially strong on the
principles of "giving before receiving" (in the form of
information) and selling innovative results-based solutions
that clients want and need.

Most of us market our services like commodities; we talk
about ourselves and what we offer -- blah, blah, blah, blah.
Why would a prospective client care about me and my
skills, unless I could prove that what I do really works, that
he'll get more than his money's worth by doing business
with me?

As a Spiritual Marketing Coach, for example, I am concerned
about helping people see their ideal niche -- that aspect of
their business about which they are truly passionate and that
their soul feels "at home" in.

My heart tells me this is a good thing and all the marketing
books tell me this is a good thing.

So you'd think that home-based business owners would be
jumping -- leaping -- onto the niche marketing bandwagon,
but that's not so. Mostly I see them listing an array of skills,
techniques, certificates and whatnot that I don't even
understand. My eyes glaze over and I move on.

That's why I like Robert Middleton's approach. It very much
resembles my own. In fact, his very first "Action Plan" is to
make you write down the vision and values for your business.
Before you go on to create your "core marketing message,"
determine your target market or develop your marketing
materials, you must know the purpose of your business.

Middleton covers the many P's of Marketing: positioning, 
packaging, promotion, persuasion, performance and
pricing. He shows you how to create a marketing "meme,"
a very succinct message that lets people understand
exactly how you can help them. He leads you to identify
your "ideal client" profile and sheds light on the professional
selling process. Like it or not, knowing how to "close the
sale" is important if you want to sign up new clients.

This manual will help you understand your business better
and will definitely give you good insights into what works in
marketing (and why). You can purchase the online version

5. Selling Your Art Online is a website dedicated to
simplifying the online selling process for artists. Chris Maher
offers articles on how to (a) set up your online gallery, 
(b) design your website for search engines, (c) cross link
for traffic, (d) make ordering online easy, and much more.

He includes a survey of what other artists are doing with
internet selling. A key section is image security -- how to
protect your online images from theft. Check it out at:
